Top 25 hobbies for 2024 including pottery, dancing and keeping bee boxes

Writing, ceramics, recycling and dancing are among the most popular hobbies Britons want to try in 2024, the survey found.

Other hobbies that  people include sewing, knitting or crocheting, flower arranging, gardening, and collecting antiques.

But the survey of 2,000 adults found that almost half of UK residents (47%) are willing to try something more unusual - keeping 'bee boxes', where bees can find refuge when they are not in the hive, top the list.

Meanwhile, foraging in the wild also ranks high in this year's top 25 activities, as does building "bug hotels," which serve as hibernation or long-term housing for insects. Half of those surveyed say they enjoy a hobby that contributes to the environment in some way, and 49% prefer outdoor activities to sedentary activities such as reading or blogging.

The research, commissioned by Sky, also named the top 20 celebrities Britons think have the most inspirational pastimes - with the likes of Beyoncé, Sting, David Beckham and Scarlett Johansson - prompting adults to try their hand at beekeeping in the next 12 months .

And now the actor Jason Statham has joined those who inspire the British to take up an unusual hobby - his new film "Beekeeper" is released.

The Sky Original story follows one man's brutal campaign of revenge after he is revealed to be a former employee of a powerful and underground organization known as the Beekeepers.

The study also found that 58% of those who enjoy outdoor hobbies believe that the activity is good for their mental health. Almost half (47%) like the idea of getting fit, while 37% think it helps them connect more with the natural world.

As a result, other celebrity hobbies inspired by respondents include Will Smith's fencing, Claudia Schiffer's insect collecting, and even Nicole Kidman's sky diving.

And 71% believe that if more people found hobbies that benefit other people or the environment, the world would be a better place. The study, conducted by OnePoll, also found that 14% found inspiration for admiration in the film.

Julia Stewart, director of the original Sky film, said: “Could 2024 be the year beekeeping becomes cool? With hobbyists like David Beckham, Scarlett Johansson and of course now Jason Statham, it's the start of a great relationship with nature."
